Self-Driving Car Test: Steve Mahan

Thanks! Share it with your friends!

We announced our self-driving car project in 2010 to make driving safer, more enjoyable, and more efficient. Having safely completed over 200000 miles of computer-led driving, we wanted to share one of our favorite moments. Here’s Steve, who joined us for a special drive on a carefully programmed route to experience being behind the wheel in a whole new way. We organized this test as a technical experiment, but we think it’s also a promising look at what autonomous technology may one day deliver if rigorous technology and safety standards can be met. Google i LOVE YOU!

TheNotverysocial says:

Making the world a safer place, at least as far as traffic goes is a must. I am all for it. The Problem? Not many people practice moderation. Given how much of our landscape has been constricted for freeways and garages, even for people who do not carry much, we have little space for development in So-Cal. I will take full advantage of it, Doesn’t mean all or even most will. Your health comes first.

Levi Dettwyler says:

What does a car driving itself have to do with anything you said? If anything, if all cars could drive themselves, then roads would be a better place to bicycle on.

zacharyp32 says:

what?

TheNotverysocial says:

You would not render good health obsolete, would you? The rise of downtown, freeways and suburbia have only squandered our landscape, and given more people unnecessary liberty to sit and fall out of shape. If people ever quit walking altogether, would you call that progress? I have been riding a bicycle and walking all my life, and never intend to stop.

Mzwambedu says:

I feel the brainwash already. Its closest thing to propaganda. I am already a volunteer ambassador, on my self term, always having debates with nerds on campus, friends and family have fallen to the Google side, but after this, its more like, I have to be a part of google. Maybe not as one of their smart, nerdy employees but atleast as Google Brand Ambassador on campus, all the way from Cape Town, South Africa. Please vote me up, who knows…

BSNentertainmentCorp says:

Do you know when these cars will be ready for full public use?

Levi Dettwyler says:

I’m lucky I wasn’t drinking something, or I would have probably spewed it all over my keyboard. Google’s Self-Driving car isn’t ready for prime time. It still requires rigorous safety testing, evaluation, and most importantly actual development. Just because it’s being driven by a computer doesn’t mean it’s actually ready to take you on a roadtrip.

Brian Sundberg says:

Uhh Right, but not like they should be. At this point there are only few on the roads and there needs to be more, Enough so the general public can get their hands on them.

maisiegel123 says:

4 milion!!!!!!!1

mike8055 says:

I think the difficulty with rolling out these cars to the public is regulation. With all the technology on the car, who’s responsible for keeping it up to date and maintained? It would be a nightmare if you had millions of these cars — that people will struggle.

Levi Dettwyler says:

That’s like saying cars are a bad thing because no one learns how to drive a carriage or ride a horse anymore.

Levi Dettwyler says:

Uhh, they are on the road. Google has been driving these around for some time as they continue to develop them.

Giovanni Bonin says:

You probably don’t ride horses to school, in the same manner, likely you have a calculator somewhere in your pocket, maybe in your phone… Generations change and so daily tasks change too. It is called evolution

Giovanni Bonin says:

Don’t mind him. Most of the people are just too miserable and are never able to see the true big picture. I am glad you do.

Yes, because allowing a blind man to drive and live again is laziness. Yes, because avoiding 44,000 people dying per year from car accidents is laziness. Yes, because saving the lives of innocents from dying to a drunk driver is laziness. You sir, are an Idiot.
